OEUK Medical Exams
Certified OEUK offshore medical examinations for energy workers deploying to UK Continental Shelf and Norwegian Continental Shelf installations. Available at all five Texas clinic locations.
What Are OEUK Medical Exams?
OEUK (Offshore Energies UK, formerly Oil & Gas UK) medical examinations are standardized health assessments required for anyone working on or visiting offshore installations on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). These exams ensure that offshore personnel are physically and mentally fit to work in remote, high-risk environments where access to emergency medical care is limited and where every crew member's fitness directly impacts the safety of the entire installation.
The OEUK medical was developed by the UK offshore energy industry in collaboration with occupational health specialists to create a consistent, evidence-based standard for fitness-to-work assessments. The examination goes beyond a standard physical — it specifically evaluates whether a worker can safely travel by helicopter to offshore platforms, respond to emergency situations including platform evacuation, perform physically demanding tasks in challenging conditions, and function effectively in isolated environments for extended rotation periods.
At Hybrid Health Clinics, our providers are trained and certified to perform OEUK medical examinations to the standards required by operators on the UKCS and Norwegian Continental Shelf. We serve the Gulf Coast energy workforce from five Texas clinic locations spanning Southeast Texas, Houston, and Dallas.
Who Needs an OEUK Medical Exam?
An OEUK medical certificate is required for a broad range of personnel who work on or travel to offshore installations governed by UK regulations. This includes:
- Platform and rig workers — drillers, roughnecks, derrickmen, tool pushers, and all drilling crew members
- Divers and ROV operators — saturation divers, surface-supplied divers, and remotely operated vehicle pilots working from offshore vessels or platforms
- Crane operators — offshore crane operators responsible for cargo transfer between supply vessels and platforms
- Production and process operators — technicians monitoring and maintaining production equipment on offshore installations
- Construction and maintenance crews — welders, pipefitters, scaffolders, painters, and rope access technicians deployed offshore
- Catering and hospitality staff — galley crew, stewards, and housekeeping personnel on offshore installations
- Visitors and contractors — engineers, inspectors, project managers, and any personnel traveling to offshore platforms by helicopter
Many Texas-based energy workers rotate to North Sea platforms operated by major international companies. The Gulf Coast is home to regional offices for operators like BP, Shell, TotalEnergies, and Equinor, as well as major drilling contractors and oilfield service companies that deploy personnel internationally. An OEUK medical certificate obtained at any Hybrid Health Clinics location is recognized by operators on the UKCS.
What the OEUK Exam Includes
The OEUK medical examination is a comprehensive assessment that covers every body system relevant to offshore fitness. The exam includes:
- Comprehensive physical examination — head-to-toe assessment including cardiovascular auscultation, abdominal examination, and skin assessment
- Cardiovascular assessment — resting blood pressure, heart rate, ECG if clinically indicated, and review of cardiac risk factors. Workers with hypertension, history of cardiac events, or significant risk factors may require specialist clearance or exercise stress testing
- Respiratory function testing — spirometry to measure lung capacity and airflow. This is critical for workers exposed to drilling muds, welding fumes, diesel exhaust, or confined space atmospheres
- Audiometry — hearing assessment to ensure workers can hear safety alarms, PA announcements, and verbal commands in noisy offshore environments
- Vision testing — visual acuity (corrected and uncorrected), color vision testing, and assessment of visual fields. Color vision is essential for identifying safety signage and distinguishing pipeline markings
- Urinalysis — screening for diabetes, kidney disease, and other metabolic conditions
- BMI and fitness assessment — body mass index calculation and assessment of overall physical conditioning. Extreme obesity may affect certification due to helicopter seating constraints and emergency evacuation requirements
- Mental health screening — evaluation of psychological fitness for working in isolated, high-pressure environments. History of significant mental health conditions requires specialist documentation
- Dental fitness assessment — evaluation of dental health to identify conditions that could cause acute dental emergencies offshore where dental care is unavailable
- Occupational and medical history review — comprehensive review of current medications, previous offshore medical history, surgical history, and any ongoing medical treatment
Norwegian Medical Certificate Requirements
Workers deploying to installations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) require a medical certificate that meets standards set by the Norwegian Maritime Authority (Sjøfartsdirektoratet). While the clinical content of the Norwegian offshore medical is very similar to the OEUK examination, there are specific differences in documentation requirements, fitness categories, and the regulatory framework governing certification.
Key differences between OEUK and Norwegian medical certificates include the regulatory authority that governs the standard, specific fitness category designations, and certain additional screening requirements that Norwegian operators may impose. Our providers are familiar with both standards and will ensure your examination and documentation meet the requirements of your specific deployment.
If you are unsure whether you need an OEUK certificate, a Norwegian certificate, or both, contact our team with your operator name and deployment location and we will confirm exactly which examination you need.
Validity, Preparation, and Documentation
OEUK medical certificates are typically valid for two years from the date of examination. Workers over the age of 50 may be issued certificates with a one-year validity period, and the examining physician may recommend a shorter validity period for individuals with certain medical conditions that require more frequent monitoring.
To prepare for your OEUK medical exam, please bring:
- A valid government-issued photo ID (passport preferred for international deployments)
- Your current offshore medical certificate if renewing
- A complete list of all medications including dosages
- Corrective lenses and/or hearing aids if you use them
- Any specialist letters or clearance documentation related to pre-existing conditions
- Your employer's name and the operator or installation you will be deployed to
Upon completion, you will receive your medical certificate documenting your fitness category and any restrictions. Most certificates are issued the same day. Walk-in appointments are accepted at all locations, but scheduling ahead ensures the fastest turnaround — contact any of our five Texas clinics to book your OEUK medical exam.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an OEUK medical exam take?
A typical OEUK medical examination takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes, depending on your medical history and whether additional testing such as spirometry, audiometry, or ECG is required. Most patients complete the entire process in a single visit and receive their certificate the same day.
Is the OEUK medical exam the same as a DOT physical?
No. The OEUK medical is specifically designed for offshore energy workers and evaluates fitness for helicopter travel, emergency evacuation, working at height, and functioning in isolated environments. A DOT physical evaluates fitness to operate commercial motor vehicles. They are governed by entirely different regulatory bodies and have different clinical requirements. If you need both, our providers can perform them during the same visit.
Can I get an OEUK medical if I have a pre-existing condition?
Many pre-existing conditions do not automatically disqualify you from offshore work. Conditions such as well-controlled hypertension, treated diabetes, and managed asthma may still allow certification, potentially with restrictions or a shorter certificate validity period. Our providers will evaluate your specific situation and advise you on any additional documentation or specialist clearance that may be needed.
Why do Gulf Coast workers need OEUK medicals in Texas?
Texas is home to many of the world's largest offshore energy companies, drilling contractors, and oilfield service providers. Workers based along the Gulf Coast frequently rotate to North Sea platforms operated under UK or Norwegian jurisdiction. Having OEUK medical exams available locally eliminates the need to travel to obtain certification, allowing workers to complete their medical requirements between rotations at a convenient Texas location.
What happens if I fail the OEUK medical exam?
If a medical condition is identified that affects your fitness for offshore work, our provider will discuss the findings with you and explain your options. In many cases, a condition can be managed with treatment, specialist referral, or additional documentation. You may receive a 'temporarily unfit' designation that allows you to address the issue and return for re-examination, or a 'fit with restrictions' certificate that limits certain aspects of your offshore deployment.
