Norwegian & OEUK Physicals at Hybrid Health Clinics

Norwegian & OEUK Physicals

Certified offshore medical examinations meeting Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) and Norwegian continental shelf standards. Available for Gulf Coast energy workers at all five of our Texas clinic locations.

What Are OEUK and Norwegian Offshore Physicals?

Offshore energy workers deployed to installations on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) or the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) are required to hold a valid offshore medical certificate confirming they are physically and mentally fit to work in remote, physically demanding environments. These examinations are governed by standards set by Offshore Energies UK (OEUK, formerly Oil & Gas UK) and the Norwegian Maritime Authority.

The purpose of the offshore medical is straightforward: ensure that workers can safely perform their duties on platforms, rigs, and vessels where access to emergency medical care is limited and where physical fitness directly affects safety for the entire crew. The exam evaluates whether an individual can tolerate helicopter travel, respond to emergencies, work at height, perform manual labor, and function in confined or hazardous spaces.

At Hybrid Health Clinics, our providers are trained in the specific requirements of these international offshore medical standards and perform these examinations across all five of our Texas clinic locations — serving the Gulf Coast energy corridor from Southeast Texas through Houston and into the DFW metroplex.

What the Offshore Medical Exam Includes

The OEUK and Norwegian offshore medical examinations are more comprehensive than a standard occupational health physical. The exam includes:

  • Cardiovascular evaluation — resting blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac auscultation, and review of cardiovascular history. Workers with cardiac risk factors may require an exercise stress test or specialist clearance.
  • Respiratory assessment — lung auscultation and, when indicated, spirometry (pulmonary function testing) to evaluate lung capacity. This is particularly relevant for workers exposed to drilling fluids, welding fumes, or confined space atmospheres.
  • Vision and hearing testing — visual acuity, color vision, and audiometric testing must meet defined standards. Workers who cannot distinguish safety-critical colors or hear alarms may require additional evaluation.
  • Musculoskeletal assessment — range of motion, grip strength, and physical capability evaluation. Offshore workers must be able to climb ladders, lift equipment, and move safely on wet or unstable surfaces.
  • Neurological screening — assessment of coordination, balance, and cognitive function relevant to safety-critical work.
  • Urinalysis and BMI assessment — screening for diabetes, kidney conditions, and body composition. Extreme obesity may affect fitness certification due to helicopter seating constraints and emergency evacuation requirements.
  • Mental health screening — evaluation of psychological fitness for isolated, high-pressure work environments. History of significant psychiatric conditions requires specialist documentation.
  • Drug and alcohol screening — many operators require pre-deployment drug and alcohol testing in addition to the medical certificate.

Who Needs an Offshore Medical

An OEUK or Norwegian offshore medical certificate is required for anyone working on or traveling to offshore installations governed by UK or Norwegian regulations. This includes:

  • Platform and rig personnel — drillers, roughnecks, derrickmen, tool pushers
  • Production technicians and process operators
  • Offshore construction and maintenance workers
  • Catering and hospitality crew on offshore installations
  • Helicopter passengers traveling to offshore platforms
  • Marine crew on offshore supply and anchor-handling vessels operating under UK or Norwegian jurisdiction
  • Contractors, inspectors, and engineers deployed to offshore sites

Texas is home to one of the largest concentrations of offshore energy companies and service providers in the world. Major operators, drilling contractors, and oilfield service companies headquartered along the Gulf Coast regularly deploy personnel to international offshore installations that require OEUK or Norwegian medical certification. Our five Texas clinic locations — from the refinery corridor of Southeast Texas through the Energy Corridor of West Houston to Dallas — provide convenient access for this workforce.

Certification and Renewal

Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive an offshore medical certificate valid for up to two years. Workers over the age of 50 may be issued certificates with shorter validity periods, typically one year, depending on the governing standard and the examining physician's assessment.

The certificate documents your fitness category and any restrictions or conditions attached to your clearance. Some workers may receive a "fit with restrictions" designation that limits the types of installations or roles they can be assigned to.

Plan to schedule your renewal examination at least four to six weeks before your current certificate expires. Expired certificates will prevent you from being deployed, which can disrupt your work schedule and your employer's crew planning. At Hybrid Health Clinics, we can often accommodate same-week appointments for offshore medical renewals.

To prepare for your appointment, bring a valid photo ID, your current offshore medical certificate (if renewing), a complete medications list, corrective lenses or hearing aids if applicable, and any specialist documentation related to pre-existing conditions. Walk-ins are accepted, but scheduling ahead ensures the fastest turnaround on your certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an OEUK and a Norwegian offshore physical?

Both examinations assess fitness for offshore work, but they are governed by different regulatory bodies with slightly different standards. The OEUK medical follows guidelines set by Offshore Energies UK for the UK Continental Shelf. The Norwegian medical follows standards set by the Norwegian Maritime Authority for the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The clinical content of the exams is very similar — both assess cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, vision, hearing, and mental health fitness. Your employer or operator will specify which certificate you need based on the jurisdiction of the installation you are deployed to.

How long does the offshore medical exam take?

A typical OEUK or Norwegian offshore medical exam takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes, depending on your medical history and whether additional testing such as spirometry, audiometry, or an exercise stress test is required. Most patients complete the process in a single visit and receive their certificate the same day or within a few business days.

Can I get my offshore medical at any Hybrid Health Clinics location?

Yes. OEUK and Norwegian offshore physical examinations are available at all five of our Texas clinic locations: Nederland, Bridge City, Briar Forest (Houston), Crawford (Houston Midtown), and Snider (Dallas). This gives Gulf Coast energy workers convenient access whether they are based in Southeast Texas, the Houston metro, or the DFW area.

What can disqualify me from getting an offshore medical certificate?

Conditions that may affect fitness certification include uncontrolled hypertension, insulin-dependent diabetes without specialist clearance, active cardiac disease, seizure disorders, severe obesity (particularly related to helicopter weight limits), significant psychiatric conditions, and substance abuse disorders. Many conditions can be managed with proper treatment and documentation. Our providers will advise you on what additional clearance may be needed if a condition is identified during your exam.

Do I need an offshore medical if I only work onshore?

No. OEUK and Norwegian offshore medical certificates are specifically required for personnel deployed to offshore installations or traveling to platforms by helicopter. If your work is entirely onshore, a standard occupational health physical or DOT exam may be more appropriate depending on your job requirements. Our team can help you determine which exam you need.
